Grandad lists house, harley and boat on shopping list after $1.57 million Keno win!
It was like any other Friday night - a few drinks and a $10 Keno Kwikpik at the local - right up until the moment when 10 numbers popped up on the Keno screen at the St George Sailing Club, turning a Sans Souci grandfather into an instant millionaire.
The man, who wishes to remain anonymous, now plans to use his massive $1.57 million jackpot to buy a family home in the Sans Souci area and, depending on what is left over, a boat and a Harley Davidson for himself.
The 10-number jackpot is the second to go off this weekend, with a Queensland father of four also winning a 10-number jackpot worth $1.75 million in west Brisbane this afternoon.
The winner was considerably calm when the 10 winning numbers hit the screen, but there were elated screams and cheers of excitement from the small crowd of regulars who witnessed the jackpot go off.
“My mate saw the numbers come up,” the winner said. “It was between two of us: we’d both been playing 10-number games.”
“I was just sitting there, not knowing if it was me or him,” he said.
Shortly after the jackpot went off, the winner’s wife joined him at the venue to celebrate their good fortune, after quickly organising a babysitter for three of their grandchildren, who the couple were looking after.
He had only just returned from a business trip to China for the wall cladding company where he works, and was given the night off by his wife to unwind at the club for a few hours.
St George Sailing Club Duty Manager Peter Taniane said after everyone in the club saw the Keno screens light up, announcing a 10-number jackpot had gone off, the excitement was infectious.
“I went to check that the jackpot had re-set, and it had.” Peter said. “Keno phones to confirm when a big win happens at your venue: once the phone rang, everyone went quiet and looked at me,” he said.
“We had two regular members with 10-number bets. Our first regular presented his ticket and it wasn’t him.
“The winner was very quietly sipping on his drink in the corner. Everyone in the club just started clapping and cheering.”
The winner spent just $10 in total on a Kwikpik ticket of randomly generated numbers, playing 10 $1 games. The winning numbers were 1, 11, 30, 31, 50, 57, 67, 68, 69 and 70.
He said he wasn’t planning on retiring any time soon.
Keno New South Wales Sales Manager John Chapman offered his congratulations to the winner and to the St George Sailing Club.
“We just love it when a small venue like this wins a major jackpot,” John said.
“It just goes to show that anyone can win, anywhere, and with an investment of as little as $1.
“No other game gives you the chance to win more than $1 million every three minutes, and more games means more winners.
“Keno gives away around $27 million to New South Wales players each month.”
